Christopher Morel has been in a bit of a slump lately, only going 2 for his last 19 over the Cubs’ last five games. However, one of those hits was a walk-off, 3 run home run against the White Sox. Morel was so excited, he rounded the bases faster than some inside-the-park home runs. No matter how he’s performing, he brings energy into the clubhouse and keeps his teammates in high spirits. We hope the bat will return to make this playoff push, but the energy is and always will be there.
The Cubs’ 4-3 win over the White Sox doesn’t happen without the heroics by Michael Fulmer. Down 3-1 in the top of the 8th, Michael Fulmer was asked to come in with the bases loaded and nobody out. How did he respond? By striking out Luis Robert (a MVP candidate if not for a guy named Ohtani), Yoan Moncada, and Andrew Vaughn in a near immaculate outing for the former AL Rookie of the Year. Fulmer’s year started off as a disaster as the Cubs’ closer, but he has since rebounded to be one of the most reliable firefighters/set up men we have had all year. Whatever cliche you want to throw around and use about Michael Fulmer’s rebound, he probably deserves it.
In a game where many of the starters on offense were inactive, an opportunity opened up for undrafted rookie QB Tyson Bagent to show what he’s capable of, and he delivered in the Bears preseason loss against the Colts. Bagent looked confident and in control of the offense as he went 9 for 10 for 76 passing yards with a passer rating of 98.3, and a rushing TD on top of that. With new free agent signing PJ Walker’s lackluster performance both in practice and games, and head coach Matt Eberflus confirming an open competition for the QB2 position, Bagent looks to be in prime position to be Justin Fields’s backup for the upcoming season.
During the Bears preseason loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the backups got extensive reps as the team tries to figure out their final roster. One player that took advantage of the extra reps was defensive end Terrell Lewis, who finished with one sack. This was the second game in a row that Lewis had a sack as he looks for a spot on a crowded defensive end depth chart. A former second-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams, injuries have slowed down the talented Lewis early in his career. Now finally healthy, he looks poised to make more of an impact going forward.
